Mendocino County Proclaims Local Emergency Related to Developing 2026–2027 El Niño Event and Winter Storm Season
On September 29, 2026, Mendocino County Interim Chief Executive Officer, Sara Pierce, proclaimed the existence of a local emergency related to the developing 2026–2027 El Niño event and upcoming winter storm season.
The proclamation is intended to support early preparedness efforts and enhance the County’s ability to respond to potential severe weather impacts. The developing El Niño and winter storm season may bring conditions requiring additional personnel and resources, expedited procurement, and increased coordination among local, regional, state, federal, utility, transportation, and emergency response partners.
Recent winter storms and atmospheric river events in California have resulted in flooding, landslides, debris flows, high winds, power outages, road closures, evacuations, and damage to homes and critical infrastructure. By proclaiming a local emergency in advance of potential impacts, Mendocino County can take proactive steps to prepare resources, protect critical infrastructure and essential services, and strengthen coordination with partner agencies.
Residents are encouraged to begin preparing for the upcoming winter season by reviewing emergency plans, ensuring emergency supply kits are stocked, and staying informed about changing weather and road conditions. Residents can prepare by visiting MendoReady.org by using the Plan and Prepare, and Current Emergencies tabs.
Mendocino County will continue to monitor conditions and coordinate preparedness efforts as the 2026–2027 winter season develops. Additional information and updates will be provided as necessary through official County communication channels.
